Steve Gardiner retired after teaching high school English and journalism for 38 years. He taught in Wyoming, Peru, and Montana. As a National Board Certified Teacher, he served six years on the Certification Council and three years on the Board of Directors of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in Washington, DC. He holds a Doctorate of Education degree. In 2008, he was selected as Montana Teacher of the Year.
He has published eight books and hundreds of articles in such publications as The New York Times, The Christian Science Monitor, The Chicago Tribune, The Dallas Morning News, The Denver Post, Education Week, Educational Leadership, Phi Delta Kappan, Leading and Learning with Technology, The Staff Development Journal, Edutopia, PBS NewsHour, The Sun, Deep Wild Journal, Sport Literate, Aethlon, and many others. He has had chapters in several anthologies including Chicken Soup for the Traveler's Soul, Bright Bones, and Wanderlust. He has won writing awards from the Wyoming Press Association, the Minnesota Newspaper Association, the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, as well as gold, silver, and bronze awards from the Traveler's Tales - Solas Awards for Best Travel Writing.
Steve is an avid mountain climber and has climbed mountains on five continents. He has reached the summit of Aconcagua in South America, Kilimanjaro in Africa, many peaks in the Alps of Europe, as well as reaching 25,500 feet on the North Ridge of Mt. Everest in Asia. He has climbed extensively throughout North America including Gannett Peak in Wyoming, Granite Peak in Montana, Mt. Rainier in Washington, Mt. Whitney in California, Mt. Hood in Oregon and many others.
He coached cross country for 17 years. He ran more than one hundred road races and six marathons, including the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon.
